Gauri Bairagan
As the title suggests Gauri ‘Bairagan’ is a Raag of bairaag (sadness of separation). The listener is left with an intense feeling of sorrow and emptiness. However, the balance of Raag Gauri ensures that this sense of loss and sadness motivates the listener to try to discover exactly what is missing. Gauri Bairagan therefore evokes feelings of sadness, which become a lesson, as opposed to creating a sense of depression.

ਜੈਸੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਊਪਰਿਮੇਘੁਲਾ ਬਰਸਤੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਧੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
jaisī dharatī ūparimēghulā barasat hai kiā dharatī madhē pānī nāhī .
The clouds pour their rain down upon the earth, but isn't there water within the earth as well?

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਲੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਬਾਧਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
sabh jag kālai vas hai bādhā dūjai bhāi .
The whole world is under the power of Death, bound by the love of duality.

The Lord, Har, Har, has ordained that the soul is to stay in her parents' home for only a few short days.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
satigur tē giān pāiā har tat bīchārā .
From the True Guru, I obtained spiritual wisdom; I contemplate the Lord's essence.

ਸਾਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਧਣੀ ਜੈਸੀ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਸਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੈਸੀ ਹਮ ਲੇਹਿ ॥
sāh hamārā tūn dhanī jaisī tūn rās dēh taisī ham lēh .
O Master, You are my Banker. I receive only that capital which You give me.

ਜਿਉ ਜਨਨੀ ਗਰਭੁ ਪਾਲਤੀ ਸੁਤ ਕੀ ਕਰਿ ਆਸਾ ॥

The mother nourishes the fetus in the womb, hoping for a son,

ਨਿਤ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਕਰੇ ਭਰਮੈ ਭਰਮਾਇਆ ॥
nit dinas rāt lālach karē bharamai bharamāiā .
Continuously, day and night, they are gripped by greed and deluded by doubt.

ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਨਿਤ ਕਿਉ ਦੇਖਾ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥
hamarai man chit har ās nit kiu dēkhā har daras tumārā .
Within my conscious mind is the constant longing for the Lord. How can I behold the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan, Lord?

ਕੰਚਨ ਨਾਰੀ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਉ ਲੁਭਤੁ ਹੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
kanchan nārī mah jīu lubhat hai mōh mīthā māiā .
The soul of the man is lured by gold and women; emotional attachment to Maya is so sweet to him.

ਜਿਉ ਜਨਨੀ ਸੁਤੁ ਜਣਿ ਪਾਲਤੀ ਰਾਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਮਝਾਰਿ ॥

Just as the mother, having given birth to a son, feeds him and keeps him in her vision
